Back in 1986, California passed Proposition 65, aka the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. This law requires products sold in California to have a warning label if they contain any one of the listed chemicals which can cause cancer or reproductive harm. Prop 65 has expanded greatly over the years and now includes over 1,000 chemicals found in everyday items like makeup, clothes, furniture, and cars.
Because Jofran is a nationwide distributor, all applicable wood product will be labeled with the possible formaldehyde gas exposure from the Prop 65 list. The label reads, "WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Formaldehyde (gas), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/furniture.”
Non-wood items that contain a finish will be labeled, "WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/furniture.”
While Californians are used to seeing these labels, it may be a bit concerning if you are not familiar with their state requirement. No need to worry – our goal is to make safe, top-notch products.
At Jofran, we care about the well-being of you and our team. We will continue to work hard to bring trusted products to you and your home!
